Gregory Robinson: The Quiet Leader Behind the Most Ambitious Space Mission

Cosmic Vision, Human Impact – at Tech Talks by UPT

With over three decades of experience at NASA, Gregory Robinson is recognized as one of the most respected leaders in the global aerospace industry. He has led over 100 scientific missions and received numerous accolades, including the TIME100 Impact Award and Federal Employee of the Year, for his remarkable contributions to space exploration.

When he was appointed Director of the James Webb Space Telescope Program, the project was at an impasse: major delays, budget overruns, and a fragmented global team. Through a leadership style based on clarity, empathy, and firm direction, Robinson increased efficiency from 55% to 95% and coordinated a team of over 20,000 specialists from 29 countries toward a flawless launch. The Webb Telescope now provides the most detailed images of the known universe – from primordial galaxies to exoplanets and black hole formation.

His journey is as impressive as his professional achievements. Born ninth of eleven children in a farming family in segregated Virginia, Robinson overcame social barriers through education, graduating from Virginia Union University and Howard University. Throughout his career, he held leadership positions at NASA Headquarters, Goddard, and Glenn Research Center, serving as an example of perseverance, competence, and integrity.

Today, he is a professor at Columbia University, where he teaches strategic leadership and the management of complex projects. At Tech Talks by UPT, Gregory Robinson will share the lessons learned from managing one of humanity's most ambitious scientific projects and discuss how trust and collaboration can transform the impossible into reality.

An architect of trust and global scientific progress, Gregory Robinson redefines leadership through vision, humility, and real impact.
